Shoplifters
Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, financed and produced by AOI Pro.
Winner of Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes International Film Festival
Married couple Osamu and Nobuyo, their son Shota, and Nobuyo’s younger sister Aki, live in a ramshackle, single-story house owned by Hatsue, surrounded by high-rise condominiums. Ultimately it is Hatsue’s social security money along with shoplifting that covers their daily necessities. Though living in what one would argue is the very dregs of society, the family is full of joy and laughter, and though bad-mouthed, all get along well with each other. One day, in the winter, Osamu finds a young girl shivering in the hallway of a neighboring apartment. Unable just to leave her there, Osamu decides to take her home with him. After seeing the injuries all over her body, Nobuyo decides to raise her as her own daughter. Afterwards, however, comes an incident that rips the whole family apart, and gradually makes clear the secrets and longings they have carried within themselves for so long...
